Who Founded Blue Mountain Womens Clinic in Missoula

BLUE MOUNTAIN CLINIC INC

Mission

It is the Mission of Blue Mountain Clinic to provide individualized, choice-based health care that respects the power of personal connection.

Notes from the nonprofit

Access, resilience and compassion are what continue to drive us as an organization. Having recently encountered a woman with 5 children who was brutally gang raped, and then witnessed her husband being pistol whipped by her assailants; she came to BMC seeking an abortion. While this story is extremely heartbreaking, one wonders what would have happened to her had she not been able to exercise her choice to have a safe, legal abortion. Would she have been further victimized by being forced to continue this unwanted pregnancy, or worse, self-induced? While this is a local incident, this crisis is nationwide. Women and families are sick, and sometimes dying because they cannot access comprehensive medical care. In a time when fewer clinics and tougher laws are making the geography of abortion and family medicine more complex, we remain steadfast and dedicated to ensuring everyone continues to have a choice. And our numbers continue to increase.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Entrust You(th), a youth health education program

Our Mission is to educate and normalize youth health by supplementing medically accurate and relevant information to all. Our vision is that one day all people can make informed decisions about their whole body healthcare because everyone is being given the medically accurate information in early adulthood.

Since 1999, Blue Mountain Clinic has subsidized medical costs, travel, and birth control for women who cannot afford to completely cover these expenses and because of that may otherwise be denied the choice of abortion and reproductive care. In the last year the Access Fund has served over 100 women—many of whom travel great distances to receive care at our clinic. This critical fund serves women from across Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Idaho who come to BMC, because there is no one providing abortion care in their area. In the last year we have continued to provide countless women with gas cards, assistance in the cost of birth control, emergency contraception, additional travel expenses, and much needed help toward the cost of the abortion procedure itself. In 2015 we saw over 100 more clients for abortion care than in the previous year. Clearly there is a need.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

With few providers trained in Abortion and Trans Health care, and the national trend of family medicine doctors rapidly decreasing, BMC already plays a critical role in the atmosphere of political and social activism in Montana and our surrounding states. Moving into the future, and our 5th year in our Residency Program, BMC will continue to be a leader in the training of abortion care providers, family medicine doctors, and imparting our mission of individualized, choice-based healthcare that respects the power of personal connection.

BMC is devoted to the belief that access to quality healthcare vastly improves the quality and dignity of life. Our advocacy efforts are driven by the realities that race, class, and gender intersect at the core of oppression and are directly linked to the cause of inequality. It is our belief that healthcare should be a basic human right. It is proven that low-income individuals are more likely to experience health problems and unexpected pregnancies which make it nearly impossible to overcome poverty. We see our work as a fundamental piece within the greater social justice movement and empower individuals to shift their thinking and behaviors. We believe this will improve their ability to make informed choices based on empowerment and education. We are providing pathways to social justice for young activists through our Entrust You(th) program. We continue to train resident doctors within our choice-based model of care in the hopes that they will eventually practice medicine in rural areas of Montana currently lacking services, and ultimately spread this knowledge. By allowing more clients and conversations through our doors with additional space we can further succeed in moving these values forward to touch significantly more people.

As family medicine and reproductive care continues to diminish, many people are finding themselves displaced within the current health care system. Nationally and regionally, Clinicians that provide both family medicine and abortion care are either retiring, being forced out of business due to clinic closures, or moving under the umbrella of larger corporate clinics. Coupled with these and the Medicaid expansion in Montana, the demand for services is drastically outweighing the supply resulting in many individuals in a position with nowhere to receive care. Currently, 25% of our clients needing comprehensive healthcare reside in the rural areas of Montana as well as some traveling from out of state. Opening our doors in 1977 as the first clinic to offer abortion services in the state of Montana, we never would have imagined that almost 40 years later we would again be the only clinic consistently offering this service. We are here because our community created us, and continues to shape us. We are prepared to face the inevitable unknowns that the process of reorganization and expansion are bound to produce but as a dynamic and community driven organization we look forward to this challenge. Blue Mountain Clinic must remain a beacon for social justice, a voice for those who have not yet found theirs, and most importantly, an advocate for personal connection.
